"To Whom It May Concern:
I had lunch at your restaurant today, and while I don’t often feel compelled to write reviews, my experience today left something to be desired, and so here I am, writing to you (there were both good and not-so-good things).
I was in Festival City with my father, and as I have previously dined at both Reflets here in Dubai and Chef Gagnaire’s other establishments in Paris, I thought it might be a good idea to stop by Choix for a quick bite (I had not dined here previously). I called to make a booking, and arrived at 1:30 as per my reservation.
When we arrived, the restaurant /patisserie was almost empty—only three out of the many tables were occupied. Despite this, nobody greeted us as we entered, and we had to stand awkwardly in the middle of the restaurant until someone noticed we were there, which took several minutes (I would like to note here that the restaurant was neither busy nor understaffed; the staff that were there were merely occupied chatting to each other).
We were then asked if we would like to sit by the window (yes), however the available tables by the window were all dirty, as if they had been cleared but not cleaned after the previous diners (crumbs, napkins, etc.). It took another few minutes for someone to come and wipe down our table, but the other tables next to us remained dirty (I don’t think it’s too much to ask to eat in a clean environment, particularly a nice establishment such as Choix).
Throughout the course of the meal, these other things happened: the waitress had to come back to re-check our order (we only ordered two items), a different waitress brought us an open bottle of water (when I asked for a closed one, she said “no, I opened this inside as I can’t open it at the table”), it took over ten whole minutes for someone to notice when we were done with our meal and clear our plates (and even then, the table was only partially cleared). We were also not offered dessert or tea, but had to request the menu ourselves. And throughout the meal, we had five (!) different wait staff serving us (is it too difficult for one person?). Also, after receiving my tea, it took five additional minutes to receive cutlery for my dessert, and then an additional five minutes to receive the actual dessert—by that time my tea was cold. I also had to specifically request for our table to be cleared from the debris of lunch while we were drinking tea—salt and pepper grinders, butter, empty glasses (all things which are not needed for tea).
Good things about the meal: the food was lovely (in particular the grilled sea bream and the apple tart), and the lovely waiter at the end who talked us through desserts was elegant, gracious, and knowledgeable (I am sorry I did not get his name, but he was lovely). Also, I really like that you bring out the tray of desserts for your diners to choose from, it’s a nice touch (so nice that I bought three extra desserts to take home). Also, the space is lovely and bright, and it was a pleasure sitting in the sunlight looking out of the window.
I would like to say, at this point, that I am not a difficult person, but rather detail oriented. I also did not want to complain during the meal, as I don’t get to spend much time with my father and wanted my afternoon to be pleasant.
I really wanted to enjoy my meal, as I love Chef Gagnaire’s restaurants and always have wonderful experiences there. The service today, however, did disappoint, and I do hope that you will read this review and consider how to improve it. I look forward to dining with you again in the future and having a more enjoyable experience than I did today.
